In Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, identity is defined as the distinguishing character or personality of an individual. So who am I? What sets me apart from everybody else? A few simple adjectives cannot possibly answer this question because, like all people, I am a complex individual. I am Rose Lynn.
A synonymous word to my name is optimism. I live a very positive lifestyle because I believe there’s a sunny side to every situation. While I know that life isn’t always rainbows and butterflies, I like to avoid negativity. I have certainly traveled some rocky roads, but I’ve come to realize that pessimism gets me nowhere, and optimism can take me anywhere. I view the hardships in life as stepping stones to a stronger me. I live to laugh and make silly faces. I am mature, but totally young at heart. I treat each day as a new opportunity and I love life.
When I brought my “erase hate” bracelet into class, people described me as a leader – someone who is open minded, strong, accepting, and outgoing. They said I must stand for something, and that is absolutely right. I do my best everyday to appreciate people for who they are, not where they’ve been or how they dress. Diversity in a group enhances the beauty of a conversation. It allows for more interesting topics and learning. Personally, I learn from others everyday. I strive to lead by example because, in my opinion, actions speak so much louder than words.
Over the summer, I was in a car accident. I was crossing an intersection when another car sped through a red light and hit me in the back. My car turned completely around and hit a parked car, while the other driver crashed into a telephone pole. I was alone in the car, both airbags went off, and I was petrified. I felt like I was moving in slow motion. At that time, a woman came to my door, helped me out of the car, and let me sit in her car until the EMTs arrived. She talked with me and calmed me down. Although she was a complete stranger, she was so compassionate. I can’t describe how grateful I am that she, an “I-it,” entered my life with perfect timing.
Speaking of timing, I went on a retreat in high school called KAIROS, a Greek word meaning a time of new possibilities. At this retreat, I made many connections and learned so much about my classmates that I hardly knew on a personal level. I was introduced to their experiences, and we encouraged each other to be the best people we could be. The retreat was filled with happiness, tears, friends, and openness. It is one of my most significant memories in my life so far and each of those girls became an “I-you” to me that weekend.
Last but certainly not least, I want to talk about my “I-thou” relationships. Out of all the people in this world, the few members that fit into this category mean the most to me. They love and support me. They know what’s best for me even if I don’t recognize it at first. Without them, I am not me. These people are, without a doubt, the cream of the crop. I love to be surrounded by my closest family and friends, and I know that they are always here for me. I carry a piece of each and every one of them with me as I face the daily challenges of life.
Today, I am a motivated young woman with a voice. Tomorrow, I will make a difference.
